10 Essential Questions to Ask Your Outdoor Lighting Contractor
Are you a qualified designer or an installer? If yes, what qualifications do you have?
Lighting isn’t about twisting wires together, it’s about creating art with light. You want someone who’s not just staking lights in the ground, but sculpting shadows, enhancing textures, and illuminating your property like a living piece of art. Inches matter. Angles matter. Color temperature and beam spread matter. Ask for photos, testimonials, even drive-by examples of their work. Because this isn’t just wiring, it’s a nightly masterpiece that should last a lifetime.
What Type of input can I have?
It’s your home, your vision, and your investment, of course you should have input. But a true pro won't just take orders. Like any great artist, a seasoned lighting designer will take your ideas and elevate them, offering expert suggestions you may not have considered to ensure the final design is better than you imagined.
Will you give me a master plan/as built? And walk me through my system?
Many contractors vanish once the lights go on. But what happens three years from now when you forget where the wires are run or what kind of lamps you need? A proper “As Built” plan is your roadmap to future fixes and upgrades. It turns a potential all-day guessing game into a 30-minute solution. Bonus points if they walk you through your system and show you where it plugs in and how to use your timer.
Where do you get the lights from? Is there any type of additional warranty from the manufacturer?
Beware of box store lights. If it’s coming from Home Depot, Lowe’s, or a generic wholesaler it’s likely cheap, short-lived, and made overseas. At Glo Geeks, we use American-made, lifetime-warrantied products from Lifetime Lighting Systems that are designed to stand the test of time. Don’t settle for less than a premium. We are looking for things like a high quality lamp, cheaper lamps that have slightly different hues and beam spreads that become noticeable at night. The fixture needs to have glare protection like a shroud and hex louver, plus have finite adjusting ability.
When (will) my landscape matures, Is there a plan for that?
Landscapes evolve. That cute little 4-foot tree could be a 15-foot beauty next spring. Will your lighting evolve with it? A great contractor plans ahead, allowing room (and wire slack) for growth, bloom cycles, and future upgrades. Make sure your system isn’t locked in time.
What happens when any part of the system fails? Do I need a maintenance plan? What will it cost if something stops working?
Things happen—kids, dogs, Amazon drivers, or lawn crews may unintentionally damage fixtures. Is your system protected against these “life moments”? We design with durability in mind and use the First ‘In Field’ repairable fixture. That means no panic when a lamp goes out or a lens gets dirty, or the knuckle gets kicked and broke. Ask what’s covered under warranty, what labor costs, and whether a maintenance plan is available.
What Are My Home’s Unique Lighting Challenges?
Every property has quirks. Maybe it’s long wire runs, glare off of a shiny or reflective surface, un-trenchable pathways, or tricky tree lighting. A pro should identify these challenges during the walkthrough and offer clear solutions that go beyond guesswork.
What methods of wiring organization do you use? What kind of connections? How is it set up so we can add additional lights
This is one of the biggest red flags in the biz. If you hear “wire nuts”, “butt splices”, or “electrical tape”—RUN. Those degrade quickly. Look for terms like copper crimps, direct burial grease tubes, and organized hub boxes with labeled wires. You want a system built for longevity, not a spaghetti bowl buried in your yard.
Can I See the Design Before It’s Permanent?
Any reputable contractor should offer a preview. We offer a Glo Show, where we set up battery-powered fixtures so you can see the design before it’s permanent. After installation, we return at night for a Night-Time Adjustment because a tiny twist or angle change can dramatically impact the result.
Will My Lights Look Great Over Time… or Get Worse?
We’ve all seen crooked path lights, rusted fixtures, or mismatched light colors. Why? Poor planning, bad placement, and zero maintenance. We plan around longevity, use rust-resistant fixtures, and avoid vulnerable placements like in grass. We even embed some lights into boulders for both durability and style.
